We live in an age of instant validation. Generative AI tools are programmed to be agreeable, helpful, and endlessly flattering. Parents are urged to build up their children's self-esteem, while coaches and educators are told to keep feedback overwhelmingly positive.
It sounds harmless—maybe even beneficial. Who doesn't want an assistant, parent, or coach who always agrees with them?

In athletic coaching, sycophantic strategies manifest as ego-involving climates—environments that prioritize outcome validation, winning, and superficial praise over skill-building and effort.

By contrast, legitimate, calibrated corrective feedback—delivered in an autonomy-supportive environment—builds true resilience, competence, and long-term engagement.
